A Thousand Grands Prix: McLaren’s Historic Monaco Moment
McLaren turned Monaco into a celebration of heritage as the team reached its 1,000th Formula 1 race.
The milestone places the British outfit alongside Ferrari as only the second constructor to achieve the feat. Racing icons including Mika Häkkinen, Fernando Alonso, David Coulthard and John Watson joined current stars Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri for the occasion. The highlight came when the original M2B roared around the famous street circuit before lining up beside the modern challenger. The demonstration showed six decades of innovation, success and evolution, connecting Formula 1’s rich past with its exciting future.
Commercial Question: Could this historic achievement inspire new commercial partnerships and brand opportunities for McLaren worldwide?
McLaren has been fined €30,000 following an incident during Monaco Grand Prix practice that triggered a red flag. The FIA determined that transparent tape placed over the clutch disengagement system button prevented marshals from activating it quickly when Lando Norris’s car stopped near the Nouvelle Chicane.
The result and recovery efforts were delayed, forcing race control to halt the session.
The governing body stressed that the system exists to allow rapid vehicle recovery, especially in situations where safety is critical. McLaren acknowledged the modification had been made for aerodynamic reasons, but officials concluded it compromised the intended function of the device.
The penalty includes €20,000 payable immediately, while €10,000 has been suspended for 12 months. The decision serves as a clear warning that safety procedures and emergency systems must always remain fully accessible and operational.
Will stricter enforcement of technical regulations push Formula 1 teams to rethink performance Vs safety?
