Beyond the Garage: What Friday in Melbourne Revealed About F1 2026

Formula 1’s 2026 season finally came alive on Friday at the Australian Grand Prix. Ferrari and McLaren dominated the timing screens across the two practice sessions, with Oscar Piastri thrilling the home crowd by going quickest in FP2. His benchmark lap of 1:19.729 immediately lifted expectations in the grandstands and hospitality suites alike. Charles Leclerc had earlier set the pace in FP1, reinforcing Ferrari’s consistent early form.

George Russell’s race simulations stood out, suggesting a car capable of controlling race pace even if single-lap dominance remains uncertain. Rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli also impressed with raw speed, finishing near the top in FP2.

“Right now, Mercedes looks a step ahead,” Leclerc said, noting that the rest of the field is still very close, with Red Bull, McLaren, and Ferrari all fighting on similar pace.

Mercedes didn’t have a perfect day either. They lost time in FP1 due to power unit setup issues, and some energy deployment problems meant their real speed wasn’t fully clear at first.

Red Bull also had a tricky session. Verstappen ran wide into the gravel, and the team continues to deal with issues managing energy deployment.

Aston Martin suffered a difficult start, hampered by power unit failures that left both cars uncompetitive. Cadillac’s debut programme focused on data gathering, despite early sensor delays for Sergio Perez.

Even Pirelli’s revised tyre pressures and persistent traffic complaints added complexity to a tense opening day.

But beyond the pit walls, Melbourne’s premium hospitality scene mirrored the intensity on track, Executives, sponsors, and fans all decoding the same question in real time: if Friday already feels this strategic and luxurious, how much of the 2026 season will be decided in the spaces between racing and experience?

But beyond the pit walls, Melbourne’s high-end hospitality scene matched the action on track, teams, sponsors, and fans all asking the same thing in real time: if Friday already feels this big and polished, how much of 2026 will be shaped away from the track as much as on it?

We are ready for the show.
