Italian Grand Prix: Gasly Outpaces Rivals to Take Stunning Pole at Monza

Formula One witnessed pure magic at Monza as Pierre Gasly upstaged the traditional frontrunners to snatch his maiden career pole position. 

The Alpine driver unleashed a breathtaking final flying lap of 1:21.786, edging out Mercedes’ George Russell by a mere 0.060 seconds to claim the ultimate starting spot for Sunday's race.

This historic milestone arrived in Gasly’s 190th Grand Prix weekend, triggering massive celebrations for the Enstone-based squad. It marks the first-ever pole for the Alpine brand and the team's first top qualifying spot since 2009. Remarkably, the high-speed Italian circuit is the exact same venue where Gasly captured his fairy-tale debut victory six years ago under equally unpredictable circumstances.

Behind the front row, penalties heavily altered Sunday's starting lineup. 

While Russell secured second, his championship-leading teammate Kimi Antonelli was relegated to the back of the field due to an engine change penalty. Meanwhile, McLaren's Oscar Piastri went third-fastest but received a three-place grid drop for impeding a rival during the second segment of qualifying.

Piastri's setback directly benefited Ferrari. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were promoted to the second row in third and fourth, giving the home crowd a massive boost after the team initially struggled for pace. 

Red Bull's Max Verstappen inherited fifth, while Piastri dropped to sixth.
