Antonelli Stays Calm as Rivals Lose Ground
Kimi Antonelli showed once again why he is the driver everyone must beat in Formula 1. The Mercedes star arrived at Spa after three difficult races had reduced his championship advantage, but he answered with a calm and convincing victory that restored his momentum.
Starting from pole position, Antonelli controlled the race from the beginning. The biggest challenge came when a Virtual Safety Car worked in Charles Leclerc's favour, allowing the Ferrari driver to jump into the lead during the pit stops. Rather than rushing to get back in front, Antonelli stayed patient, looked after his tyres and waited for the right opportunity. His decisive overtake later in the race showed the confidence of a driver thinking about the championship, not just one race.
The victory became even more important after teammate George Russell retired on the opening lap, allowing Antonelli to extend his lead at the top of the standings.
Behind Mercedes, the fight between the leading teams remains wide open. Ferrari continued its recent progress with another strong performance from Leclerc, while Lewis Hamilton recovered from a difficult afternoon to score valuable points.
McLaren also left Belgium with reasons to be optimistic. Lando Norris produced another impressive recovery drive after a grid penalty, and Oscar Piastri once again showed strong race pace. With new upgrades expected in Hungary, McLaren hopes to return to regular podium contention after the summer break.
Red Bull also had a solid weekend. Max Verstappen claimed another podium despite struggling with tyre grip and seeing the Virtual Safety Car work against his strategy. Third place may not have been the perfect result, but it was another important points finish for the reigning world champion.
Further down the order, the midfield battle continues to get closer. Racing Bulls and Alpine are now level in the fight for fifth place in the Constructors' Championship, while Audi moved to within just one point of Williams after another excellent drive from Gabriel Bortoleto. Every race is becoming more important, not only in the title fight but throughout the grid.
With Hungary still to come before Formula 1's summer break, Spa may be remembered as the weekend that shifted the energy back towards Mercedes. Antonelli has reminded the rest of the arena that consistency is becoming his greatest strength.
