Can Lando Norris Turn Pole Position Into Victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix?
Can One Lap Change the Story of an Entire Grand Prix? - Formula 1 qualifying is more than just deciding the starting grid, it often shapes the entire race. At the Hungaroring, where overtaking is famously difficult, every position matters. That made Saturday's qualifying one of the most important sessions of the weekend.
Lando Norris delivered an outstanding performance to secure his first Grand Prix pole position of the 2026 season for McLaren. His final flying lap was enough to edge Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton by an incredibly small margin of just 0.012 seconds, proving once again how competitive Formula 1 has become.
Ferrari also showed strong pace throughout the session. Hamilton looked capable of taking pole after setting the fastest time during the first runs in Q3, while teammate Charles Leclerc completed the top three. However, neither Ferrari driver managed to improve on their final attempt, allowing Norris to steal the spotlight at the very end.
The closing minutes of qualifying were filled with drama. Max Verstappen lost control of his Red Bull at the final corner and spun into the runoff area. Although he managed to continue, the incident forced several drivers behind him to slow down, including Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli and George Russell. Verstappen eventually qualified sixth but expressed frustration over the unpredictable balance of his car.
Off the track, the stewards also had work to do. Hamilton came under investigation for allegedly blocking Oscar Piastri during the session, while Antonelli was investigated for a possible yellow flag infringement. Those decisions could still influence the final starting order.
Further down the grid, Aston Martin continued to struggle despite recent upgrades, with Fernando Alonso qualifying 16th. Several familiar names, including Carlos Sainz, Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll, were also eliminated earlier than expected.
Now, attention turns to race day. With hot temperatures expected, tyre management will be one of the biggest challenges. Teams are preparing for what could become a demanding two-stop strategy, while maintaining track position will be essential on one of Formula 1's most difficult circuits for overtaking.
The final race before the summer break is perfectly set up for an intense battle between McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull.
