Next Stop, Mexico: Kimi Antonelli Dominates Texas to Edge Closer to the F1 Title
Kimi’s Antonelli s victory at the Circuit of America (COTA)was a lesson in pure strategic efficiency.
By leading every single lap from pole position to the checkered flag, the 20-year-old Mercedes driver put himself on the absolute limit of securing the 2026 World Championship.
The core of the race came down to tyre management and pit-stop mathematics. COTA’s asphalt is notoriously abrasive, meaning tyres degrade rapidly, losing grip and costing valuable lap time. Teams must constantly balance the time lost staying out on old, slow rubber against the 20-second time penalty incurred by entering the pit lane for a fresh set.
Mercedes opted for an aggressive, disciplined one-stop strategy. Antonelli managed his initial set of tyres perfectly, maintaining a steady gap at the front without overworking his rubber. On Lap 25 of 56, he made his solitary pit stop.
Behind him, Ferrari and Red Bull tried to split the tactical data. Both Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen committed to a two-stop strategy. Their calculations assumed that the extra speed gained from having two fresh sets of tyres would offset the 20-second time penalty of a second pit stop.
The data, however, favored Mercedes . Antonelli ’s tyre management during his second stint was so precise that his lap times never dropped into the danger zone. While Leclerc managed to use his fresher tyres to overtake Verstappen for second place, neither driver could close the mathematical deficit to Antonelli.
With this ninth win of the season, Antonelli leaves Texas with a commanding 123-point lead .
Because a driver can score a maximum of only 26 points per weekend (25 for the win, 1 for the fastest lap), plus occasional sprint race points, there are only 125 total points left to claim in the final five races. Antonelli needs a mere three points in Mexico next weekend to mathematically seal the title.
In doing so, he will rewrite the record books as the youngest champion in F1 history, eclipsing Sebastian Vettel’s 2010 record. For a grid that featured 467,000 fans over the weekend, the message was clear: Antonelli’s rise is no longer a question of probability, but of simple arithmetic.
