Texas Shootout: Antonelli Beats the Giants to Claim Pole in Austin

Kimi Antonelli has put himself in the perfect position to wrap up his very first world championship after a stunning qualifying session at the United States Grand Prix. The 20-year-old Mercedes prodigy broke his qualifying drought, securing his first pole position since July by beating Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by a tight 0.179 seconds.

The young Italian couldn't hide his excitement over the team radio, letting out a loud shout of joy.

On Sunday, if Antonelli wins the race, and Lewis Hamilton finishes fifth or lower while George Russell places ninth or worse, the championship is officially his. Luckily for Antonelli, the math is already leaning his way, with Hamilton qualifying fifth and Russell in sixth.

The result caught many by surprise. Ferrari had dominated the practice sessions, but their pace vanished in the final shootout due to cooling track temperatures and tricky tire performance, leaving Charles Leclerc down in fourth. Verstappen looked dangerous early on but struggled for grip when it mattered most, ultimately settling for second ahead of his impressive teammate, Isack Hadjar.

Meanwhile, McLaren had a frustrating day in Texas. Despite arriving with a fresh batch of upgrades, Lando Norris had a crucial lap time deleted for crossing track limits, leaving him visibly upset after what he called a "crap job."

Antonelli knows the real work starts now. With Max Verstappen right behind him, getting a perfect start up that steep hill into Turn One is going to be everything if he wants to turn this pole into a championship.
