Norris Shines in Hungary as Verstappen and Antonelli Complete the Podium
Lando Norris continued his impressive 2026 Formula 1 season by claiming victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix after an exciting race full of strategy, teamwork and unexpected twists.
Starting from pole position, the McLaren driver had to work hard to secure the win, overcoming teammate Oscar Piastri and keeping Max Verstappen behind during the final stages of the race.
The Hungaroring, located just outside Budapest, is known as one of the most technical circuits on the Formula 1 calendar. Often described as "Monaco without the walls," the track features many slow and medium-speed corners with very few long straights. This layout makes overtaking extremely difficult, meaning that qualifying performance, pit-stop strategy and tyre management often decide the outcome of the race rather than outright speed.
Although Norris started from first on the grid, Piastri made an excellent getaway and took the lead in the opening corners. The two McLaren drivers quickly pulled away from the rest of the field, showing once again that the British team currently has one of the strongest packages in Formula 1.
As the race developed, strategy became the deciding factor. McLaren left Norris on track longer during the second round of pit stops, allowing him to benefit from cleaner air and fresher tyres later in the race. The plan worked perfectly, helping Norris regain the lead once both drivers had completed their stops.
Piastri's hopes of fighting back suffered a major setback after losing valuable time while passing traffic. Soon after, his race came to an unfortunate end due to a suspected gearbox failure, ending what had looked like another strong performance and denying McLaren a one-two finish.
Behind the winner, Max Verstappen once again extracted the maximum from a difficult Red Bull. Despite complaining throughout the weekend about the car's balance and handling, the reigning World Champion managed his tyres well and secured second place through smart strategy and consistent pace.
Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli continued to impress with another calm and mature drive. Starting further down the grid after a penalty, the Italian recovered brilliantly to finish third, collecting another podium and strengthening his reputation as one of Formula 1's brightest young talents.
Ferrari experienced a frustrating afternoon despite showing competitive pace. Lewis Hamilton received another five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane, dropping him behind teammate Charles Leclerc, who finished fourth. George Russell also endured a difficult race after a poor start left him fighting through the field to seventh place.
With the championship entering its next phase after the summer break, McLaren appears stronger than ever, but can anyone stop Norris from building even more momentum in the title fight?
