Russell Strikes First as F1 Returns to Zandvoort
Formula 1 is back from the summer break and Zandvoort wasted no time delivering pressure.
George Russell claimed Sprint pole for Saturday's race at the Dutch Grand Prix, setting the benchmark in a closely contested Friday session. His Mercedes teammate and championship leader, Kimi Antonelli, will start fifth.
The weekend began in difficult conditions. Overcast skies, drizzle and low grip made FP1 a challenge before the track gradually dried. Antonelli topped the session, while Russell was third, suggesting Mercedes had arrived from the break with strong pace.
But Sprint Qualifying told a slightly different story.
Russell delivered when it mattered, setting a 1:11.567 in SQ3 to secure pole. Lando Norris put McLaren alongside him on the front row, while Charles Leclerc took third for Ferrari. Oscar Piastri starts fourth, with Antonelli, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton following behind.
For Antonelli, the session was not straightforward. A trip through the gravel in SQ1 caused minor floor damage, adding more work for the Mercedes crew before the final stages.
Zandvoort is one of Formula 1's most demanding circuits. Its narrow layout, fast corners and steep banking leave little room for mistakes. Overtaking is also notoriously difficult, making track position particularly valuable.
That is why Sprint Qualifying matters more than a simple Friday headline. With only one practice session before competitive running, teams must quickly understand tyre behaviour, car balance and track evolution.
Saturday now brings two major battles: the 24-lap Sprint and Grand Prix Qualifying later in the day.
For Verstappen, this weekend carries additional emotion. He is competing in his final home Grand Prix at Zandvoort as the circuit prepares to leave the Formula 1 calendar after 2026.
Russell has made the first statement. But with McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes closely matched, Friday may have only opened the next chapter.
